6 & 7 : The Gallery Show

Cardboard and I have been committed to our 6 & 7 project for the past 2.5 years. We decided, for our 3rd blog birthday, that we'd like to do something really special and put together a gallery show...

[...blowing out those birthday candles...]

Our wish came true!
For the past few months, we've been planning, editing, printing, list-making, top model photo shooting - all this while consistently excited and nervous - and, in less than two weeks, it's showtime!

We'd love to meet our readers (IRL) and show off the BIG BIG ENLARGEMENTS of our little ol' weekend photos. We hope many ALL of you can attend. If you are a design boner fan on Facebook, please RSVP on our
event page.

Glass canisters

Glass canisters, at CB2

I can be super picky about the most random of objects. For example, I've been looking for the perfect glass canister to hold cotton balls, Q-tips, etc. for several years! They're either too fussy for my tastes or more money than I want to spend on something that I feel "meh" about.

Looks like my search is finally complete. This set from CB2 is just what I was looking for: simple, modern and affordable. $6.95 for the little one and $8.95 for the big one. I'm sold!

Bonus Bone: Dutchtub

When Hardwood and I went on vacation a month ago, we rented a house with a hot tub. We ended our days in the hot tub with a glass of wine and stared up at the stars. We decided if we ever have a vacation home, we must have some celebrity hot tub action!

Dutchtub offers everything that Hardwood and I want in a hot tub: cool design and environmentally friendly. You just need access to water and wood. No chemicals to keep the water clean and no electricity to heat the water.

For these reasons, I, Porcelain, declare this a Design Boner.

Fab Design for the Win

Lady Briggles informed us of this crafty contest and we don't have much time so we need to do a quick and dirty post for all you pattern lovers out there. Put down the BBQ recipe for a second get to designing some fabric.

Fabric on Demand, an online DIY fabric design resource, is hosting a contest to design a fabric to reupholster the above (and naesty) set of four dining room chairs. The chairs' owners are open to your own color palettes and design motifs but the deadline is this Saturday, July 4th, 11:59pm PST. Here in Central Time, that buys you a few extra hours (July 5th, 1:59am) to knock yourself out with your coveted and until-now-undiscovered "square" pattern.

If you are looking for a little inspiration, take a look at the previously existing patterns that thrill the requisite family.

Make sure to follow the rules, the most important being that you are "capable of spending the $500 prize to revitalize the economy." Entries are open to popular vote on July 5th so good luck and tell 'em Design Boner sent ya'!

Bonus Bone: Red Leather

I just can't let this Michael Jackson passing thing, well, pass, just yet. Besides the moonwalk, Michael gave us the iconic red leather jacket. In his honor, I wanted to highlight red leather for the home.

Yet, after my many minutes a'google, I found that red leather can often appear tragically flawed and/or uncomfortably weird.

But at design boner, we prefer to focus on the good in design, on the qualities that elevate acceptable into classic.

Michael Jackson Too?!

Dude.

I can't believe Michael Jackson is dead. And I can't believe I got rid of my Jackson doll.

One (g)Love, MJ.

Farrah & The Poster Revolution

I just read the sad news that Farrah Fawcett passed away this morning. She may have accomplished many things in her short lifetime but the one thing she'll always be remembered for is her guaranteed presence on the bedroom wall of every hetero-boy in the late '70s.

In honor of Farrah, the newly anointed angel, let's remember our teenage poster portraits. Whose eyes did you gaze into, while picking out the names of your future children (and horses)? Or maybe it was [insert hottie here]'s mile-long legs that gave you your first lesson in...um...self-design, as it were.

My dreamboat of choice was Corey Haim. I loved, loved him - with his big eyes, bigger hair, and squeaky not-quite-a-man voice. Fellow Haim'er, Candid Karina, provided the only image I could find online of the poster that also shared my wall space. Just look past the flash spot and awkward family photo to the gelled and leathered Corey...sigh. The reason for my obsession should be obvious.

So tell us all who made you swoon and provide pics and/or links, if you can!

Eye Candy: Chicago Botanic Gardens

Since our computer system at work was being upgraded (and, therefore, unusable), Porcelain and I, along with the rest of our department, took a field trip to the Chicago Botanic Gardens. It wasn't the springiest day to visit but there was no down of the pouring and the inspiration (color, shape, texture) was completely user-friendly.

Feel it along with us and help will summer to get here already by checking out the rest of our beauteous botanicals.

Bonus Bone: Mod Toolboxes

Take a swig of Rolling Rock. Survey your work. Nod your head and smile at a job well done. Yet, in the end, stay true to your femme-chic self and close up those unsightly tools.
